Urchin
2007
paper, ink, fabric
3.5' x 2.5'
In “Urchin” a globular shell bristles with thousands of angry spines. The graphic, inked exterior forms a menacing defense for the plush haven within. Like the sea creature protects its precious roe, “Urchin” guards a quilted velvet womb with its thorny shield. This piece creates a cozy vessel that entices the viewer to inhabit it. Nestled in the royal blue refuge a tenant would feel invulnerable. Required to remain outside, however, shelter and security can not be realized, and the viewer vacillates between the role of a predator and a desire to be the protected.
