Clean
2000
wood, glass, dirt, water, antique slip
5.5' x 1.5' x 1'
In "Clean" an antique slip encased in three glass boxes stands five feet tall and mimics my proportions. The hem of the dress is obscured by deep brown dirt, in the middle box the dress swims delicately in water, and the top portion of the dress was stiffened, standing there proud and ghostly. “Clean” came from a desire to isolate the process of being clean and dry after being filthy, cold, and wet. The feeling is a distinct combination of exhaustion, contentment, satisfaction and warmth, possible only after the degradation and discomfort experienced earlier. I suspended each moment in time so that the visual combination would produce a feeling that could be constantly revisited.
